It’s been a couple of hours since Caine and Locke went at it, shortly after the fight Clova went to attend to Caine in her medical lab, apparently he's suffered from a mild concussion. It's obvious that the two of them are not ordinary people, watching them both fight it's clear to see why they are responsible for 'taking care of business' as Caine puts it. Two people; one of which is extremely agile and possess a shape-shifting bionic type of arm, and the other person who's built like a tank with a projectile firing baseball bat, not the kind of people you want to fuck with. Seemingly un-phased by the level of chaos that just took place Locke casually walked toward the elevator before leaving without saying a word.
I thought about the other people in this building; A towering skyscraper with at least 100 floors, set in the heart of a bustling city, surely there are other people living in this building too? They must hear or see some of the chaos that goes on here and wonder what the fuck is happening, right? I asked Data about this, considering the fact that Shadowtask is a team of people who are supposed to remain under the radar this all felt too obnoxious. I was told that the entire building is cut off from the public, and that the Shadowtask HQ is the only area in the entire building with inhabitants. This is the reason why there is a single elevator in the lobby, and why that elevator has no controls. Data pointed to his computer monitor as it changed it's image to show a camera feed live from inside that elevator, he said “no one gets further than the lobby without my approval”. This means he will have seen me get in that elevator earlier on, and that explains why the thing moved on it own without any input from me.
Clova came back from attending to Caine. She told us that he was fine and that he just needs to rest for the night. She asked Data and myself what we were talking about, I mentioned that I was curious as to where Locke went after his bout with Caine. Clova's face lit up as her eyes widened, and before Data had a chance to say anything she excitingly said that Locke was in the living quarters in zone 1. She said that it was only right that I be shown that area since I should start “getting used to the place”. She looked over at Data who, with a grin said "sure, why not.". As we entered the elevator she started talking to me about the relief she feels now that I’m here. She said that the struggle to find me over these past few months has been tough, but that the effort will all be worth it once we find a way to take down Arketeq. It has been hard for me to really feel anything since I woke up in that motel a while back, and yet at this moment I felt bad for her. They’ve asked for my help, yet they know that I can’t remember a thing about my past. What use am I to these people? I’m not sure they even know themselves, but they seem to place a lot of faith and trust in whoever instructed them to find me.
The elevator opened up into Zone 1, the living quarters. It was a big open square shaped area and in it were 6 doors; two to the left of me, two on the right and two directly in front of me. The doors were each assigned letters in a clockwise pattern alphabetically, through ‘A’ to ‘F’. As we exited the elevator I asked Clova if this is where they all live, she said that each one of the Shadowtask members has their own living area. Each room has a numerical pass code entry system, considering these people spend almost all of their time together they all need their own space. The numerical pass-codes are unique to each room, and only the inhabitant of that room knows the code to enter. Clova pointed out the various rooms to me; Room ‘A’ is Data’s, ‘B’ is Locke’s, ‘C’ is Caine’s and ‘D’ is Clova’s. As we made our way around the area we stopped a few meters in front of door ‘E’, Clova asked me who I thought it belonged to. Having mentioned each member of Shadowtask already, I didn’t have a clue, looking back it should have been obvious to me. As we stood there Clova began smirking, she prompted me to enter the 8 digit pass-code into the keypad beside the door. Confused, I asked her what code she was referring to, and as her grin widened she replied with “yours”. She started walking towards the elevator; “Any number combination you like, just punch in the digits and don’t forget the order! Once its set, it’s set.”. She boarded the elevator leaving me behind, and as the elevator doors slid shut she left me with a few words that have played on my mind ever since, “you’re one of us now”. As I walked towards the door I wasn’t sure how to feel, I entered a pass-code into the keypad and kept repeating it over and over in my head until I could make a note of it in this entry. As the door slid open I was greeted by an unfamiliar voice, “Welcome” echoed throughout the room as I walked inside with the door closing itself behind me.
Fast forward to now, It’s been a short while since I entered this room and I’ve had some time to think. This place is amazing, It’s a self contained apartment with panoramic views of Solai, housing everything someone would need to live here. It’s spread across two floors, though I’m yet to see what’s up there. I’ve spent the past 45 minutes just looking out over the city, there’s something about a view like this that helps clear my mind. That feeling of familiarity I felt when i first saw the silhouette of this city back at the gas station has been amplified a lot since I entered this room. I’ve spent a lot of time this evening thinking about the events that I have documented since waking up in the motel. What do I make of the obscure flashbacks of a blue iced birthday cake and being mugged by a gang? Why do I have a diamond ring in my jacket pocket? And why, even though I remember nothing, did my mind choose to latch onto and reveal the name of a company that I have no recollection of? The one question I kept asking myself tonight was ‘can I trust these guys?’ I’ve been given refuge and a path to help find the answers I’ve been looking for, and I’d be stupid not to take a chance on these people seeing as they’ve taken a pretty big gamble on me. Maybe I should show Data my journal entries and see if he can fill in the blanks. The fact that he found me in the first place shows me that he’s good at piecing information together. I’ll sleep on it, although saying that I don’t remember the last time I slept…
